Micato’s Wildlife Safari Suggestions

By Micato Staff July 28, 2019

We all grow up seeing images of the dramatic landscapes of Africa and the animals who inhabit the continent, but few of us ever get to see those animals up close in nature. This wildlife spectacle is undoubtedly what draws many of our guests to Micato in the first place. Observing animals from the comfort of our safari vehicles, with a knowledgeable and passionate Safari Director and Driver/Guide, is both calming and exhilarating. Guests commonly remark that their greatest moments on safari are when they simply, quietly watch the animals go about their daily lives. The African wildlife is that enthralling. For those of you with animal spotting at the top of your bucket list, consider these three wildlife-centric safaris with Micato.

1.) Tanzania Spectacular

Our Tanzania Spectacular safari will have you visiting Tarangire, the Ngorongoro Crater, and the Serengeti. Kicking your wildlife safari off in Tarangire will see you exploring rocky landscapes, rolling hills, and golden savannahs teeming with life. You’ll be treated to sightings of numerous African wildlife superstars like elephants, hartebeest, lions, zebra, wildebeest, gazelle, and buffalo. Additionally, birders will be thrilled with the dozens of avian species to be found amongst the trees while out in the bush. Mind you, whetting your wildlife palette in Tarangire is only the beginning of this spectacular.

Moving on from Tarangire, you’ll make your way to the Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This location is absolutely marvellous. Nestled in the Crater Highlands of Tanzania, the crater occupies an area roughly the size of 73 Central Parks combined. The lush environment of the enormous crater allows it to serve as a home for many animals as well. About 30,000, in fact. While it’s difficult to keep yourself from marvelling at this natural wonder all on its own, you should keep your eyes peeled for black rhinos, hippos, zebras, cheetahs, Cape buffalo, and lions. The Ngorongoro Crater offers some of the best African wildlife viewings you’ll find the entire continent over.

Rounding out your Tanzania Spectacular is the iconic Serengeti. Underneath the immense, crystal blue sky you’ll finish off your trip in the planet’s most populous animal kingdom. As you kick back in your safari vehicle with your expert Safari Director you will marvel at giraffes, elephants, cheetahs, gazelles, zebras, and wildebeests. You may even catch one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on the planet, the great wildebeest migration! If you’re looking for a magnificent wildlife safari, this is a big experience packed into a short 10 days.

2.) African Splendour

For those looking for a lengthier experience, consider Micato’s African Splendour. This 17-day safari will introduce you to the best African wildlife through the contrasts of East and Southern Africa. While this safari will have you visiting places we discussed above like the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, you’ll also make your way to Victoria Falls in Southern Africa. Victoria Falls, a UNESCO World Heritage Site considered one of the world’s largest waterfalls, is situated on the Zambezi River on the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia and stands nearly 360 feet tall and 5,600 feet wide. While the big draw here is the sheer majesty of the Falls themselves, there are also numerous animals to observe while you’re here.

In the river area above the Falls, you’ll find hippos and crocodiles while the gorges feature lizards, honeybadgers, klipspringers, and clawless otters. Birders will be fascinated by the birds of prey species to be found here as well, such as black eagles and peregrine falcons. Furthermore, you’ll venture to the lovely Maasai Mara. The game drives in the Mara deliver in spades and you stand a great chance of spotting any, or all, of the Big Five during your visit. The variety of landscapes you’ll discover and the creatures you’ll meet along the way make African Splendour one of our greatest wildlife safari offerings.

3.) Botswana’s Timeless Wilderness

Ah, the dreamy land of Botswana. We’d recommend a visit to the Okavango Delta alone but Botswana’s Timeless Wilderness elevates the Botswana experience. Botswana’s wilderness is expansive and on this wildlife safari, you’ll be visiting the Okavango Delta and the previously mentioned Victoria Falls. When you arrive in the Okavango Delta, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, you’ll be embraced by its dreamy allure. For a place most humbly described as a “swampy inland delta”, it’s truly magnificent. This fan-shaped network of nutrient-rich wetlands is home to hundreds of species. For specifics, the Delta has 1,500 species of plant life, 160 mammal species, 530 bird species, 35 species of amphibian, and 155 species of reptile. The Serengeti may have more recognizable wildlife on display but the Okavango Delta feels like an alien landscape in the best way possible. Moreover, touring the Delta from the perspective of a mokoro canoe is an unbeatable experience. For a majestic adventure with splashes of the extraordinary, consider embarking on a wildlife safari in Botswana.
