Graced with bountiful Big Five game-viewing and a fenceless border with Kruger National Park, the private, 14,000-hectare Thornybush Nature Reserve is much loved—and especially so for its crown jewel, the Little Saseka villa.
Catering to couples and small families, including children of all ages, this exclusive-use hideaway embodies intimate luxury with a relaxed, come-as-you-are attitude. “Saseka” means “beautiful” in Tsonga—and we certainly tip our hat to this place, which is northing short of a South African bushveld masterpiece.
This exclusive-use tented villa, ideally suited for two adults and small children, with flexibility to host four additional guests in neighbouring tent, is nestled within the private confines of Thornybush Nature Reserve, adjacent to Kruger National Park. The inspiration behind the interior design, the meticulous imaginings of celebrated architects Silvio Rech and Lesley Carstens, stems from the adventurous spirit of South Africa’s 19th-century Gold Rush—playfully paired with 21st-century refinement.
We could commend Little Saseka’s singular, un-stuffy charm without end. Guests here settle in quickly, as if they’re in the posh pad of a friend’s African escape. Comforts include a lounge and a dining area as well as a swimming pool and a private veranda, overlooking the seasonal Monwana riverbed where elephants, kudu, and warthogs pass by for an afternoon drink. A light-hearted style pervades the old-and-new furnishings evident in the canvas walls, the ceiling lined with iconography inspired by ancient rock art, and sprawling artwork that depicts local flora and photography. Private meals are prepared by a personal chef, whilst a dedicated butler ensures that your every flight of fancy is satisfied.
Thornybush Nature Reserve is renowned for its game viewing, including the Big Five, and your Micato Safari Director is ready to direct you through the bushveld. From spying African painted dogs to the elusive black rhino, he’s a wealth of knowledge, accompanying you throughout Thornybush and father field, into Sabi Sand Nature Reserve where leopards roam.
Guests can also enjoy a riverbed dinner on the banks of the Monwana, take in a wellness treatment on their private veranda, and venture out on guided bush walks. After a dinner prepared by your affable private chef, your Safari Director can lead you on an exciting night drive for the chance to see predators on the prowl or glimpse rarely seen nocturnal residents, from gorgeously spotted African civets to shy bat-eared foxes. A hunting hyena lets out an eery whoop, welcoming us to the kingdom of night.
