Landing at Loirien Mara’s private helicopter pad in the golden Maasai Mara, we’ll find “the air so crisp and pure and full of magic,” as Barbara Wood once wrote. Three villas—Loirien, Naika, and Kulaal—await us in the private Partakilat Conservancy, each with a dedicated team to fulfil our every wish, and bedecked in gorgeous modern fittings. The true wonder, though, lies just beyond our doorstep, where the scent of sun-warmed wild sage wafts across our veranda and the iconic landscapes of the Mara triangle spread out before us from our perch on the Oloololo Escarpment.
In this private wonderland, some of the country’s most powerful conservation stories have taken root. We’ll embark into the bush to see endangered white rhinos, the first generation of a growing, thriving population, or meet with biologists of the Pangolin Project in the comfort of our lounge to learn about one of the planet’s most iconic species, who call this land their home. From floating in a hot-air balloon in the hush of dawn to wine-tasting in the cellar, paired with local Mara cuisine, every moment here is filled with a deep tranquillity—the finest expression of a safari like no other.
Loirien Mara’s three private villas occupy a verdant stretch of land above the Maasai plains, with rolling lawn for badminton and stargazing, and, if you like, Maasai-taught archery lessons. Flanking the master Loirien Villa on either side, Naika Villa and Kulaal Villa are sprawling, two-suite abodes, equipped with walk-in wardrobes, spa-inspired en-suite bathrooms with deep soaking tubs, and floor-to-ceiling glass windows, all styled with modern interior design and natural tones that harmonize with the views outside. Indeed, we find our eye is naturally drawn outdoors, as each villa includes a private panoramic terrace, gardens filled with meditation spaces and swing beds, and a swimming pool. The lounge and dining area, where a fireplace holds a warm flame at night, are supported by a state-of-the-art kitchen, helmed by your private chef.
Loirien Villa, with its three en-suite bedrooms, contains all this and more. After a morning of game-viewing—taking in, perhaps, giraffes crowning the tops of acacia trees or lionesses snoozing in the sun—you might retire to your personal steam room and sauna, or savour a glass of a reserve wine in your cellar, or opt for sunset yoga on the rooftop deck. For cosy evenings, a library and private cinema room delight guests of all kinds.
Within the private conservancy, the grand acreage is ours to discover. One morning, we might swap out a game drive for an avian discovery walk, learning about the region’s diverse birdlife from our expert Micato Safari Director. Or, local Maasai women from the nearby village will stop by for a visit to lead us through a fascinating workshop in local beading, a luminous display of bold reds, blues, and yellows. Should we wish it, a private helicopter awaits on the property, ready to fly at our command for an aerial jaunt of game-viewing—there is also a fleet of hot-air balloons for a quieter, calmer sunrise flight.
At Loirien Mara, we can take a Maasai cooking class or a sensory Kenyan coffee tasting, sit for dinner at an open-fire nyama choma barbecue or enjoy a white-tablecloth bush breakfast, and set out on a trek to spot rare white rhinoceros. For the fitness-inclined, your Micato Safari Director can easily arrange guided jogs through the Mara plains, or you can indulge in a spot of golf in your villa’s cutting-edge sports simulator.
