Sabi Sand Game Reserve, South Africa

Simbambili Game Lodge

Insider’s Review of Simbambili Game Lodge

Amidst the thrillingly creature-blessed climes of South Africa’s celebrated Sabi Sand Game Reserve, we make gentle haste for the serene Simbambili Game Lodge. This secluded retreat is rich of contemporary comforts and renowned for its heart-warming welcome from old Africa hands, the Cowden family. Magical encounters with the so-much-more-than-a-number Big Five are the stars of our stay. A fenceless border shared with Kruger National Park allows abundant wildlife leave to meander freely – elephants sup from the lodge’s neighbouring waterhole, while local celebrity leopards are drawn to the waters of the Sabie and Sand Rivers. From games drives bustling with wondrous wildlife to luxurious lodge life, this is Greater Kruger safari-ing at its most intimate.

Accommodations at Simbambili Game Lodge

Each of Simbambili’s nine suites is a riverbed-facing sanctuary of calm. After the rewarding exertions of morning game drive, what better than to recline under the shade of a secluded sala bed, plunge into a cooling private pool, or enjoy the delights of armchair safari from a deck designed for giraffe-watching and kudu-contemplating. Thatched roofs and earthy palettes echo the surrounding bushveld while, inside, freestanding bathtubs and sleek modern finishings sing of intelligent elegance. The Honeymoon Suite and Waterhole Suite are tucked at either end of the camp for enhanced privacy. Delicious meals are served beneath open skies in the dining room or in the privacy of your suite; not to be missed: a lavish bush breakfast or lunch straight from the wood-burning pizza oven.

Activities at Simbambili Game Lodge

Let the African sun set the rhythm of safari life. Coffee in hand, our open-air game vehicle sets out just as the bush wakes and again, as it settles into another action-rich night. Perhaps we trace a track to – there! – a panting, toothy leopard, just as a spirited pack of wild dogs suddenly flash through a stand of Jackal berries. Later, the infinity pool beckons like birdsong through the trees. There’s time to delve a little deeper into the life of the lilac-breasted roller and its Coraciidae kin in the well-stocked library, to work out at the gym, or enjoy a health-giving massage imbued with indigenous plants such as Rooibos, Aloe, and African Potato Bush at the lovely new spa. And come evening, accompanied by the tinkle of a cooling sundowner in hand, the wild world comes alive once more beneath a diamond-studded African sky.
