Maasai Mara, Kenya

Elephant Pepper Camp

Insider’s Review of Elephant Pepper Camp

Amidst the cooling flush of a pepper tree grove, our home-from-home lavishes comforts both traditional and modern. This classic camp is supremely situated in Kenya’s fabled Maasai Mara, a fabled sanctuary bounded to the south by its rightly renowned cousin, the Serengeti. Here, we’ll relish some of safari’s sublime-iest moments – perhaps locking soulful eyes with an all-knowing elephant, or revelling in a hair-raising pursuit of hunter and hunted. The beyond-comfortable Elephant Pepper camp is tucked in a sprawling and protected private conservancy – more than 70,000 acres of prime safari terrain blanketed with fertile savannahs sparky with wildlife that includes some 450 bird species, passing populations of buffalo, elephant, giraffe, wildebeest and zebra, and happy-to-call-this-home resident lions, cheetahs, and leopards. Indeed, it has Dr Seuss written all over it: “There’s no limit to how much you’ll know, depending how far beyond zebra you go.”

Accommodations at Elephant Pepper Camp

The camp comprises eight enviably airy and intimate tents (configured as doubles or twins, according to preference). In each, the ensuite master bedroom and sitting room are furnished in elegant Indian Raj Campaign style — rich with a patina of dark woods, handsome rugs, and intricate brass fittings. Located at either end of the camp, the Honeymoon / Family Suites offer spectacular views and ideal addresses for couples or families looking for extra space and privacy. Take tea on the private verandah (or a tranquil swing in your heavenly hammock) as wildlife roam the horizon just beyond. Dinners are an event unto themselves with a menu oriented towards the north of Italy, excellent wines, and freshly baked breads and pastries.

Activities at Elephant Pepper Camp

Star billing goes, quite naturally, to our game driving through the Mara. But the early-morning and late-afternoon outings from Elephant Pepper also go beyond the usual (as if usual is a term that ever applies to safari). When the mood strikes, there are additional pre-dinner game drives illuminated by red-light spotlight. These adventures reveal a hidden world inhabited by predators on the hunt: hungry lions, loping hyenas, even nosy aardvark. Our ever-ready Micato Safari Director, together with Maasai from the local area, also lead up-close walking tours for a bird’s-eye perspective on this exotic eco-system. Also on the menu, festive al fresco bush breakfasts and romantic sundowners come complete with sparkling glassware and roaming wildlife.

Note for Families

Elephant Pepper Camp is well suited for the younger safariers among us. Among the offerings: entertaining guided walks within camp, fire-making sessions, archery, and wildlife tracking. Tents may be arranged with one extra bed, for children under 16 years; Family Suites suit larger, always merry, safari gangs.
