Steeped in the magic of the Maasai Mara, the northern half of the epic Serengeti-Maasai Mara ecosystem, earth’s most spectacular gamelands, Kichwa Tembo is admired for its deep devotion to African hospitality and safari comfort. Perennially named one of Travel+Leisure’s Top Ten African camps, Kichwa’s vast views bring great intimacy to our safari experience, perhaps especially during the Great Migration, which unfolds dioramacally, dramatically right before our eyes. That intimacy is heightened by the camp’s seclusion in a private reserve owned by local Maasai people, and by our visits to local villages.
Kichwa Tembo’s 40 luxurious tents come in a variety of configurations (including family tents), and all feature Maasai-inspired simplicity and elegance, without stinting for a moment on modern conveniences; “a perfect balance of luxury without detracting from the surroundings,” as a recent visitor says. The camp offers a massage room, a new safari shop, an infinity pool that almost seems part of the Mara itself, and stylish indoor and outdoor dining areas, fine places to savour Kichwa’s much-lauded cuisine.
Africa is the great activity at Kichwa Tembo. By that we mean: encounters with the fullest range of the continent’s incomparable wildlife, on day and night game drives and expertly guided walks; deep relaxation in quiet, untroubled nature; evening sitarounds at the camp’s lovely fire pit; sumptuous dining; optional balloon rides over the plains and riverbanks of the Mara; and rich opportunities to meet and interact in meaningful ways with the Mara’s vibrant people, who, as always greet our Micato Safari Directors as old friends, and Micato safariers as welcome friends of friends.
