Kruger National Park and Sabi Sand Game Reserve, South Africa

Tintswalo Safari Lodge

Insider’s Review of Tintswalo Safari

From the heights of intelligent luxury to the romance of Afrique profonde, the elegant Tintswalo manages a rare alchemy that makes safari-ing – always a rewarding pursuit – that teensy bit more magical. Tucked at the edge of South Africa’s famed Kruger National Park and deep within the exclusive Manyeleti Nature Reserve (“place of the stars” in the local Shangaan, a dialect of Tsonga), this sanctuary offers seamless access to one of the continent’s richest ecosystems. The camp – deep sofas, woven rugs, a smattering of lovely antiques – offers up wide savannah, acacia-dotted hills, and lush ravines alive with wildlife. Accordingly, the Big Five roam freely here, chanced upon oftentimes by cheetah and wild dogs—which rounds up nicely to make way for observation of the delightfully enigmatic Magnificent Seven.

Accommodations at Tintswalo Safari

Eight individually themed suites are linked by wooden walkways that hover above seasonal waterways – six Explorer Suites, each for two guests; the stately Baines Presidential Suite and grand Grant Suite, ample enough for parties of four. Decorated in the spirit of the golden age of African exploration, each is a private, air-conditioned haven of campaign chests, curated antiques, and colonial charm rendered in high contemporary comfort. Dip and dangle in your plunge pool, recline into the four-poster bed, partake guilelessly of the panoramic soaking tub, overlooking the adjacent elephant-alluring grasses. Here, splendour lives not only in safari’s creature comforts—but in the creatures themselves.

Activities at Tintswalo Safari

Mornings and afternoons, we venture deep into Manyeleti’s wildlife-dense terrain. Game drives are taken in comfortable open-air, four-wheel-drive vehicles, thoughtfully equipped with blankets for misty mornings, ponchos for surprise showers, and cocktails for golden-hour stops (the sundowner being a time-tested and much-enjoyed safari institution). After a languid lunch, perhaps it’s time for a meaningful glimpse into local life with an excursion to a nearby Shangaan village, a visit with traditional healers, or a little shopping amongst community artisans. For a dramatic perspective: an optional helicopter flight or balloon safari promises unforgettable views of the Drakensberg escarpment. Between game drives, unwind at the tranquil spa, take a refreshing dip, or – in the spirit of diarist and old Africa hand, Alexandra Fuller, who observed: “Africa teaches you to listen with your whole body” – simply soak up the silence.

Notes for Families & Children

Children aged nine and above are welcome. Two of Tintswalo’s generously proportioned suites can accommodate up to four individuals, making your family together time an easeful pleasure.
