Kruger National Park, South Africa

Kapama Karula

Insider’s Review of Kapama Karula

“Here I am, where I am supposed to be,” declared Karen Blixen in Out of Africa – precisely the way we feel at Kapama Karula, too. Full of light, airy spaces and defined by an intelligent luxury, both the intimacy and grandeur of South Africa’s nearby Drakensberg Mountains and Kruger National Park are present in this private bit of bushveld. More than 40 species of mammals roam these lands joyfully – the Big Five included — all attended in spritely song by hundreds of bird species. Like a symphony that begins forcefully, and soon slides into more nuanced notes with an entrancing aria or two, safari-ing at Kapama is a sensual experience indeed. And with the sensual, comes the spiritual: local Shangaan legend holds that their bravest chiefs are reborn as lions — gaze deeply enough into the eyes of a lion and you too may glimpse the soul of such a king.

Accommodations at Kapama Karula

Ten properly grand villas and two family villas inhabit the banks of the meandering Klaserie River, a vital life source for the sundry assemblage of wildlife we’ll meet. Safari chic is balanced with understated luxury: deep tubs and indoor and outdoor showers, wraparound glass doors, and the sublime comfort of a raised deck, complete with heated pool and shaded loungers. Meals are as memorable as the setting: delicious breakfasts and lunches in the open-sided dining area, dinners by the crackle of a starlit boma, or perhaps a private evening by the firelit library. For the quiet hours between game drives, the library and lounge overlook the river where elephants, antelope, giraffe – and all the local Limpopo gang – are drawn again and again to the water’s silvery silence.

Activities at Kapama Karula

Safari life always beats to the rhythm of the bush, so morning and late afternoon game drives set off while wildlife are at their most animated. And just like the animals, we humanoids do our finest relaxing in the corresponding off-hours. For this, Kapama Karula boasts an indulgent, award-winning spa: four treatment rooms, steam room and ice plunge, and a seriously lovely pool. The fitness centre is all that, as well: the latest equipment, guided yoga and meditation. The languidly long lounge sofas invite quieter pursuits—curling up with a book, a game of chess, or simply watching the Klaserie River flow past, ice tinkling in a glass of something nice. (Did we mention the Champagne is chilling?) For a true nocturnal frisson, plump for a romantic sleep-out under vast diamond-riddled African skies. Here, “even the air seems to roam free,” as Beryl Markham observed, in “Africa… an escapist’s Utopia.”
