A deeply elegant sentinel over the Cape Peninsula’s Bantry Bay, Ellerman House is less a hotel than a private world unto itself. Built in 1906, this grand Edwardian mansion is now a coveted Cape Town home-from-home, known for discreet glamour and top-drawer service. Very much of the terroir, its emerald-green terraced gardens spill towards the shimmering swimming pool and indigenous flora mingles with striking contemporary sculpture – indeed, we are living amongst one of the continent’s most extensive private art collections. At every turn – from the superb wine cellar to the soigné spa – here is easeful luxury at the edge of the wild Atlantic waters.
With just thirteen rooms and two exclusive-use villas, Ellerman House is a triumph of intimacy over scale. Each room is individually decorated, with grand French doors opening onto private sea-facing terraces. In addition to the large outdoor pool, two Spa Rooms have their own swimming pool. Throughout the hotel, more than a thousand works of art – from Old Masters to eye-catching figurative sculptures – trace two centuries of South African creativity. A visit to the showcase Wine Gallery where the country’s finest vintages lie in wait is highly recommended. A welcomingly boutique spa offers four treatment rooms, a polar plunge, and sauna. Drift from the serenity of a sea-view sundowner to dinner at one of Ellerman’s award-stealing restaurants, OneEighty and Curate, buoyed by selections from their 7,500-bottle-strong cellar.
Take a walk unlike any other through Ellerman’s manicured and much-loved gardens. Inspired by nearby superstar Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, the grounds are positively abloom with proteas and pelargoniums, trimmed with birdsong and awash with colour. Perhaps we’ll spend the afternoon in the soft light of a private garden art tour, plump for the drama of a coastal drive towards a vineyard tasting, and cap the day with a sommelier-led sundowner. Further afield, maybe a helicopter flight along the dramatic peninsula, or a short boat-crossing to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated for 18 years. Of course, the greatest luxury here may be the freedom to do very little – linger by the pool, contemplate a particularly poignant painting – in a haven just minutes from a city that pulses with energy.
