Okavango Delta, Botswana

Belmond Eagle Island Lodge

Insider’s Review of Belmond Eagle Island Lodge

Cradled in the heart of Botswana’s Okavango Delta, Belmond Eagle Island Lodge delivers the essence of safari from an entirely different vantage point: the water. We’ll set out game-viewing through a labyrinth of channels, lagoons, and flooded grasslands, where sightings unfold in shimmering reflections. The lodge sits poised on the private island of Xaxaba, framed by ilala palms and enveloped by one of the world’s richest ecosystems—a UNESCO World Heritage site teeming with birdlife, slow-splashing herds of elephant, and the enigmatic, semi-aquatic antelope, the lechwe. Meditative, dreamlike, the days pass like ripples on an oasis pool, here in Africa’s last Eden. We’d expect nothing less from the marvellous hosts at Belmond, whose other properties, Savute Elephant Lodge in Botswana’s Chobe National Park and the rose-hued Mount Nelson, in Cape Town, bring us to applause at the end of each stay.

Accommodations at Belmond Eagle Island Lodge

Just 12 thoughtfully appointed tents, whose architectural design takes its inspiration from the region’s mighty termite mounds, welcome us home with a quiet beauty. Canvas walls and thatched roofs are offset by pale timber, driftwood accents, and warm tones of ochre and golden yellows—the colours of the sun as it sets each evening. Inside, the furnishings include king-sized beds dressed in soft grey-blue linens, indoor bathtubs, and walk-in wardrobes. Floor-to-ceiling sliding doors open onto private decks complete with plunge pools, hammocks, and uninterrupted views of the floodplain—a flawless stage for morning coffee as we keep an eye out for kingfishers, darting along the surface.

Activities at Belmond Eagle Island Lodge

The break of morning at Belmond Eagle Island Lodge begins a little differently than most safaris. Mokoro canoe excursions—expertly handled by local navigators, and guided by our Micato Safari Director—present gentle encounters with birds nesting low in papyrus, jewel-toned dragonflies, and elephant matriarchs, leading their families through the water. Motorboat excursions reveal yet another perspective, carrying us deeper into channels as we scan for hippo pods. Fishing can also be arranged—and the most thrilling excursion takes us game-viewing from a helicopter, to take in the scope of the Delta in all her majesty. We’ll return back to the lodge to revel in the day’s adventures precisely however we wish, whether that means a candlelit dinner under endless stars or a rewarding cocktail at Fish Eagle Bar.
