The 2026 Micato Hot List

By Micato Staff October 7, 2025

Standing in your wicker gondola, rising with the sun over the waking wilderness, you will float so soundlessly through the African skies that you’ll hear the quiet.

And your prevailing thought may well be, I’m in the right place at the right time.

On a Micato safari, you will have this thought often, thanks to your Micato Safari Director, the 24-hour Micato Concierge team, and many others. As one of our guests told Travel+Leisure, “We never met guides or staff so friendly and knowledgeable about the animals and the locations, and the culture. They seemed to have a sixth sense for anticipating our needs. It was really something.”

Here now, 10 really-something safari experiences you’d expect from the Travel+Leisure 10-Time #1 Winner.

1. Helicopter Safaris Over Otherworldly African Landscapes

Possibilities abound: You can lift off near the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater. Glide over flamingo-filled waters that turn Lake Bogoria pink. Skim the thunder of Victoria Falls, the elephant-dotted wetlands of the Okavango Delta, or the snow-fed streams of Mount Kenya (not far from where Prince William proposed to Kate Middleton). On a Micato Helicopter Safari, you will have rare access to these and other wildlife-rich corners of the world.

And: A Micato Hot-Air Balloon Safari is a near-perfect way to start your day: Floating in delicious silence over the wakening savannahs, seeing the world in a way few ever will.

2. Exclusive Use of a Private Safari Villa on Wildlife-Rich Lands

There are myriad benefits to having a private safari villa to yourself: For starters, lots of privacy, accompanied by perpetual, personalised service thoughtfully orchestrated by your Micato Safari Director and a cast of chefs, sommeliers, housekeepers, and butlers who will ensure your every need is met.

Whether it’s the Shangi-La-like Ol Jogi above, or Royal Malewane…

…where you can finally take the meeting you never knew you needed…

…or one of the other exclusive-use private villas and estates we like, you and yours will have no shortage of space to unwind, both together and blissfully alone.

These private safari villas and estates shine for milestone birthdays, reunions, and multigenerational family occasions. We’ll help you pinpoint the perfect safari villa to include in your Micato Private Custom Safari.

3. The Best Kept Secret, Until Now: Quiet Season on a Micato Safari

Quiet wasn’t perfected on safari.

It was born here.

From November through March (excluding December holidays), fewer travellers roam our gamelands. The airports are calmer, the towns are hushed, and the savannahs are blissfully unpeopled. Meanwhile, wildebeest, zebras, and antelopes are calving. Elephants and lions may be, too. Landscapes are lush, sunsets are vivid, and temperatures are moderate.

Your Micato Safari Director, along with your Driver-Guide, may be the only other humans in sight. Micato’s Africa is truly a year-round destination, but if you’re looking for the right place at the right time, this is absolutely one of them.

A mama kisses her newborn for the first time. Two Micato guests witnessed this birth from start to finish when their Safari Director, acting on an insider tip, whisked them to the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater. It was the couple’s 30th anniversary, and in their words, the experience was “the anniversary gift that will keep on giving forever.” The birth took place in November, one of Quiet Season’s best-kept secrets.

The Pinto Family gets up close and personal with mountain gorillas in Rwanda

4. One of the Most Exclusive Wildlife Encounters in the World. Really.

Tracking majestic mountain gorillas with Micato in Rwanda is among the most exclusive encounters in the world: Only about a dozen habituated gorilla families live in the velvet-green Volcanoes National Park, and no more than eight people may visit any given gorilla family each day.

Crouched in a bamboo forest, you’ll watch the gorillas emerge. They might wrestle with their youngsters, forage, and, if the odds are in your favour, gaze into your eyes.

Micato can also make your gorilla adventure fully private and will arrange as culturally rich a day as you like, including visits to the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Gorilla Fund and the gravesite of Dian Fossey, who immortalized these gorillas in the mist.

5. Your Own Private Island Is Calling. You’ll Want to Take This One.

The Okavango Delta is a labyrinth of lush waterways and astonishing wildlife that Micato guests can explore by vehicle or foot, but let’s face it, the water is the star here. Gliding around this riverine paradise in a mokoro (dugout canoe) or a craft that’s a tad larger, with a Micato Safari Director and other guides in tow, is the way to go.

Within the Delta is your own private island: Sitatunga Private Island Suite, a rare retreat deep in the wetlands. Days begin with the promise of singular safaris and end with sundowners on your private deck.

We can arrange a Micato Custom Safari that includes a stay here. You may also explore Botswana with us on Botswana’s Timeless Wilderness or
Passage Through Botswana and Zimbabwe.

Phinda Private Game Reserve

6. Be a Part of Protecting Rhinos From Poachers

Through special arrangement, Micato guests venture to Phinda and join conservation experts to witness them darting rhinos from a helicopter, notching ears, fitting tracking devices, monitoring vital signs, and other procedures done with the utmost care. Each step is humane, precise, and vital to protect rhinos from poachers.

Guests work side by side with conservationists, veterinarians, and others during one of the most vital conservation efforts on our planet.

7. Kayak with the Penguins of Cape Town

We would love to arrange for you to kayak alongside African penguins in the pristine waters off Boulders Beach, guided, of course, by a leading conservationist and ornithologist.

After kayaking embark on a helicopter journey above the coastlines, neighborhoods, and mountains of Micato’s Cape Town.

You can explore Cape Town with Micato during a Custom Safari, African Splendour, Jewels of South Africa, or a Micato safari extension.

Sossusvlei Desert Lodge

8. Time Magazine-approved: Our Quiet Skies Safari

Before the Micato Quiet Skies Safari made our list, it made Time magazine’s list of the World’s Greatest Places of 2025.

The magic of this safari happens in Namibia’s NamibRand Reserve, Africa’s first Wilderness Quiet Park. Your days at Sossusvlei Desert Lodge will bring astronomer-led stargazing, private observatory talks, and journeys to Sesriem Canyon and Big Daddy Dune.

Thereafter, at Kwessi Dunes, your mornings start with bush walks and yoga, afternoons with hot-air balloon above red sands, and evenings in your private villa gazing through a retractable skylight at the wondrous night sky.

9. An Inspired Pairing: The Maldives and Micato

From above, the Maldives shimmer like a strand of pearls across a deep blue sea. It’s a destination on the bucket lists of many. You can reach these rare islands from Micato’s India, flying by seaplane to Noonu Atoll and the private lagoon of Soneva Jani. Here, overwater villas offer freshwater pools, swings, and slides into the sea, with play and wellness coexisting. After exploring Delhi or Mumbai, the Maldives may be the place to unwind, reconnect with loved ones, and disconnect.

10. Bhutan: Where Your Happiness Is Serious Business

We hope it shows that we take the happiness of our guests quite seriously. And in that spirit, we’re happy to share that Micato can take you to like-minded Bhutan, a culture of serenity in the Himalayan foothills, where Gross National Happiness is valued above wealth.

Mass tourism is intentionally absent here. In Thimphu, historic Punakha, and the peaceful Paro Valley, serenity, as the Happiness Index would suggest, is woven into daily life. Crowds are absent and quiet is the order of every day. Our eight-day Bhutan journey departs from Delhi or Mumbai and may also be included on a Micato India Custom Journey.

The bottom lines

If any of these 10 experiences spark your interest, know they’re just the beginning of what Micato can arrange.

And if we can suggest even more inspiration, the 2026 Micato Brochure is hot off the presses and features three new safaris, East Africa’s Golden Savannahs, The Great Herds of Kenya and Tanzania, and Jewels of South Africa.

We’d love to share what we love about them and chat with you about which Micato safari might be in your travel cards: Have your travel advisor get in touch or give us a call and we’ll make some exciting plans together.
