Abu Camp

Okavango Delta, Botswana

Abu Camp - water view

Insider’s Take

Unspoiled and untamed, the Okavango Delta is one of the world’s largest inland river systems. Tranquil lagoons and waterways wending through immense floodplains contrast with the adjacent parched desert landscapes. Over 1,100 species call this land their home, and both predator and prey abound — this is ideal game-viewing country.

Abu Camp is wonderful for so many reasons, but the Camp’s resident elephant herd has truly charmed us. Become a part of their world: observe the elephants from your veranda, walk with them, and even help to groom and bathe the herd The newest elephant bonding experience is the Abu Camp starbed, a platform above the elephant sleeping ground, where the sounds of the elephants snoozing below lulls you into a peaceful slumber beneath a star-thick sky. There is simply no other experience like it.

Accommodations

In the heart of the Okavango Delta sits Abu Camp six luxurious tents on a 400,000-acre private reserve. The tents have a distinctive elegance and surprising opulence in the midst of this ancient riverine forest. Stylish furnishings grace the spacious tent, and light fills the space from your private viewing deck over the lagoon. There is also a private villa available, ideal for families, with its own butler and chef.

Activities

Discover the Delta in a vehicle, on foot, or even gliding through the maze of reed-laden channels in a mokoro —a charmingly rustic African version of the gondola. You can even fish on the river from your mokoro, bringing home tigerfish or tilapia for the chef to cook.

An even more tempting game-viewing experience is an elephant-back safari: the elephant becomes your companion, bringing a quiet grace to your safari as it lumbers slowly through the underbrush. Exploring the wilderness atop an elephant, you become part of the wilderness around you.

End the day with sundowners on a motorboat. A breeze whispers through the air, cool and soothing, as you motor through the wilds and sip a refreshing cocktail. A pride of lions gather in the evening light, preparing for the hunt. Crocodiles lounge in the river and hippos burble below. Birds swoop low over the water. The evening is yours.
