Xigera Lodge

Insider’s Review of Xigera Lodge

Under a canopy of trees in the western reaches of Moremi Game Reserve, Xigera Lodge is so full of dynamic, splendorous art that we might be tempted, upon first arrival, to think we’ve stumbled into an art gallery in the middle of the Okavango Delta, rather than a safari lodge. More than 80 pieces of contemporary African art and design have been painstakingly curated here.

As we arrive and settle in, we are delighted to become fully acquainted with this elegant, artful lodge. Each of the dozen guest suites, sprinkled individually amongst the watery floodplains, are styled with distinct furnishings, and each design element of the many shared spaces, from the gym to the spa to the outdoor pool, is handcrafted.

Accommodations at Xigera Lodge

In the 12 suites, we will find hand-carved, four-poster beds, separate lounge areas with handcrafted, pan-African art, and en-suite bathrooms with indoor and outdoor showers as well as a bathtub that, like the private outdoor deck, afford peaceful views of the blue and green world beyond. Xigera Lodge also includes a dining area, gym, spa, and outdoor pool, as well as a cozy lounge with a fireplace.

Activities at Xigera Lodge

The Okavango Delta is a game-viewing paradise. We’ll set off on game drives into magnificent wetlands fringed by hardwood trees—which offer shade, cover, nesting areas, and food for a wide variety of mammals and birds—in search of the region’s most stunning inhabitants. Lion sightings are particularly prevalent here, and, with the help of our Micato Safari Director, we might also see leopard, large herds of buffalo, cheetah, wild dog, elephant, white and black rhinoceros, hyena, giraffe, wildebeest, and zebra. Avian life is prolific, and the bird-enthusiasts among us will grip their binoculars tightly as we come across species of waterfowl, waders, and more.

The days at Xigera end as they ought on safari: with sundowners, naturally. But the setting takes an curious turn: we will be served our gin and tonic, or glass of wine, or perhaps even a gaily refreshing mocktail out on a motorboat, breezing down the Okavango River. In the rippling water beyond our vessel, giant crocodiles bask in the last rays of the day’s sun. On the shoreline, we might catch a glimpse of a pride of lions stretching in the slanting light, rousing from their afternoon nap to prepare for the night’s hunt. The moment, like the sky above, stretches before us without end.
