The pulsing green heart of Botswana’s Okavango Delta—a place we think Karen Blixen (a.k.a. Meryl Streep in Out of Africa) could happily include as “where I ought to be”—is home to the pristine 55,000-acre Moremi Game Reserve. Tucked within the Reserve’s private maze of meandering water channels and papyrus-fringed islands, Sandibe Lodge is a masterstroke of safari architecture and ecological chic. Aptly likened to “a nest of golden weavers,” its sumptuous suites perch above the reeds for horizon-to-horizon views over the Santantadibe Channel, and front-row seats to Africa’s wildlife theatre.
Twelve spacious one-bedroom suites are aeries of comfort and style: king-sized bed, spacious ensuite, walk-in wardrobe, stylishly kitted out with handcrafted basketware, sculptural furnishings, and soaring ceilings. Each opens onto a private deck where an infinity plunge pool and outdoor shower are shaded by wild palms and gnarled fig trees. The main guest area takes architectural inspiration from the arced curvature of a resting pangolin – a shy, rare beast, yet one we have a much-hoped-for chance of spotting here at Moremi. There’s a plush viewing platform for sundowners or stargazing, and for the more earth-bound there’s even a pizza oven and interactive kitchen—because why not twirl your own Margherita while watching elephants amble by?
The Okavango—the UNESCO-blessed inland delta beloved for lions, leopards and sprightly red lechwe—is equally celebrated for the pedigree of its feathered aristocracy. Keen twitchers (and the avian curious, alike) are rewarded with sightings of the African pygmy goose, slaty egret, or elusive lesser jacana. Guided walking safaris provide ground-level thrills, there’s a state-of-the-art gym and massage sala, and optional helicopter flights to lift us a few flaps of a wattled crane closer to what the great writer-photographer Peter Beard called “a paradise caressed by light and air in their most special forms.”
Children of all ages are welcome to settle into the family suite with connecting walkway for four people, and one suite for three. Budding naturalists learn to track animals, identify birds, and float in their private plunge pool while hippos chortle nearby.
