Singita Private Game Reserve

Insider’s Take

Micato Safaris shares a singular bond with Singita properties — we’ve been voted the #1 World’s Best Safari Outfitter an unprecedented nine times, and Singita has been the #1 World’s Best Hotel twice… and counting. Working with another #1 World’s Best company means that we’re working with a company that understands our undying commitment to impeccable service, above-and-beyond experiences, and true luxury.

Singita means “the miracle” in the local Shangaan dialect, and once you arrive at your elegant home in the bush the translation becomes abundantly clear. One cannot heap enough praise on Singita—the game viewing, the rangers’ knowledge and the service are all fantastic, and yet it is the inspired design that renders guests speechless. If there’s heaven on earth, then this surely must be it!

Accommodations

Between a private concession in Kruger National Park and the Sabi Sand Game Reserve, Singita lays claim to four fantastic lodges—none within eye-sight of any other and all absolutely stunning and unique:

Singita Private Game Reserve

Boulders Lodge

Twelve enormous suites line the wild banks of the Sand River, well-spaced for complete seclusion while splashing in your plunge pool or lounging on your private veranda. Each is decorated with contemporary tranquillity—lofty design and earthy colours—and kitted out with every amenity, including double-sided fireplaces and outdoor showers. The main lounge houses a library, gym, spa and an extensive wine cellar, situated beneath the eponymous boulder.

Singita Private Game Reserve

Ebony Lodge

Each of the twelve warm and cosy suites is dappled in the shade of ebony trees and boasts a breathtaking view of the surrounding African landscape, with a deck and pool overlooking the banks of the Sand River. A colonial feel pervades the eclectic and colourful rooms, with African fabrics and British antiques. Warm yourself by the double-sided fireplace or cool off in the outdoor shower. Curl up in the lovely library and savour a glass from the 12,000-bottle underground wine cellar.

Lebombo Lodge

The thirteen suites and single villa of this one-of-a-kind lodge are perched like eagles’ nests on the mountainside over one of Africa’s most dramatic landscapes: sweeping wilderness and a winding river below, indigenous lebombo euphorbia trees all around. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls ensure that you have the most breath-taking view possible, whether you’re curled up with a book under the roof of woven branches, swimming in your private lap pool, or sipping a cocktail on the deck.

Singita Private Game Reserve

Sweni Lodge

These seven astoundingly luxurious suites are tucked away amongst the trees on the banks of the Sweni River, laying claim to one of the most pristine wild territories in South Africa, near the border of Mozambique. The elegant suites—constructed from bleached branches and slatted wood—are elevated on stilts and surrounded by decks of dark timber. Floor-to-ceiling windows bring the African outdoors to your fingertips, and you are at one with your surrounds.

Activities

We wake to piping hot coffee and tea delivered to us at dawn, and we are on the road shortly after, motoring through the bush in search of game. Predators and prey abound: leopards lounge in trees, and lion cubs frolic in the grass, watched nervously by herds of antelope but ignored by the all-mighty elephant. Amazingly, the critically endangered white and black rhinoceros are both found here, and we are spellbound as we watch them quietly graze in the dew-covered grass.

Later we explore the bush by mountain bike or by foot, getting an entirely different perspective on the limitless wilderness that surrounds us. Or we can experience all that the lodge has to offer: an archery range, a gym with a view of the bush, a lap pool, a luxurious spa… or perhaps just a nap in the shade of an ebony tree.
