Insider’s Review of Sasaab

As of today Sasaab has helped to register three local women’s groups, and they are continually striving to do more. This is vital, as the local tribeswomen in the Westgate Community Conservancy live in a traditional hierarchical structure in which they are usually restricted from becoming involved in any significant employment. Each of these women’s groups makes bracelets and beaded bottle covers which are used in the lodge and sold in the gift shop—the proceeds bring freedom and autonomy for the women, as well as the ability to educate their children. Just by staying here, you’re giving back.

Perched on the high bank of the Ewaso Nyiro River, there is a breath-taking view from every vantage point of Sasaab. The landscape of this Northern Frontier District is decidedly different than the rest of Kenya—arid and big-skied, peppered with acacia trees and prickly pear, here and there a mass of cattle being driven by a Maasai tribesman or a herd of elephant tromping across the hills and dells. And always there is Mount Kenya rising in the distance, ethereally blue and snow-topped.

Accommodations at Sasaab

Sasaab is outrageously stunning. Each of the nine large, luxury rooms provides unfettered privacy and magnificent views everywhere you look—even from the en-suite bathroom. A private plunge pool is a superb place to relax and watch the animals stroll by from the comfort of your own veranda. The property is designed in the style of a Moroccan palace: white, light and airy. Four-poster beds bedecked in fine drapery, long low couches strewn with silk pillows, and cool blue lanterns all complement the lodge’s soothing elegance.
