Just how majestic are these creatures? Our video may help.
Floating low over Africa’s golden savannah, a nimble little flying bush taxi sets down delicate as a teacup, deep in the pulsing heart of Serengeti National Park. And pulse it does. As legendary zoologist Bernhard Grzimek said, “It is a place where you can feel the pulse of the Earth, the rhythm of life that has been playing out for millions of years.” The secluded Turner Springs camp – a welcoming clutch of chandelier-and-canvas chic quarters – is a magical magnet for a kaleidoscope of the – quite roughly –two million ungulates, 1,000 elusively coy leopards, 500 sleek cheetahs, and the many-many magnificent lions who frequent this neighbourhood. Just as the peripatetic wildlife appreciate this water-blessed landscape, so are travellers charmed by what they’ll encounter. Perhaps a cooling sundowner on their tent’s private terrace, followed by delicious dinner amidst candlelight and the symphony of an African evening. In the hallowed space between the pressed linens and vintage leather trunks, between the shade of an acacia tree and the campfire’s light, Turner Springs showcases Serengeti life from a privileged perch indeed.
There are 20 guest tents dotted across the broad camp, considerately and amply spaced with privacy top of mind. So too, comfort is prime – note the memory-foam beds, for example, in the double, twin and interconnected family tents. Fitted with en-suite bathroom (and what a view!), comfortable leather sofas, a writing desk, and a rather glorious veranda that comes with a private 180-degree perch onto a personal corner of Serengeti National Park. By an ancient acacia tree, the crackling fire of the boma lights conversations that flow freely as the camp’s curated wine selection.
Given our fortunate position in what some rather gracelessly call a “high-traffic zone” for wildlife, game drives here are rewarding morning and afternoon pursuits. So too, the chance to join a guided walking safari within the camp highlands. Sundowners are a rich tradition, a prized moment to drink in the sounds and sights of the Serengeti as it prepares to spring to nocturnal life. Join the local Maasai for some timeless storytelling, a lesson in Swahili, or a traditional fire-lighting ceremony. And inevitably, there is time well-spent under the endless African sky, in full equatorial sunshine or beneath a blanket of Southern Hemisphere stars, soaking up the romance of the Serengeti.
