North Island Okavango

Insider’s Review of North Island Okavango

Yours, one exquisitely private island secreted away within the shimmering mosaic of Okavango waterways. This luxurious water-ringed retreat is a relative newcomer to our list of Botswanan firm favourites, but firmly favoured it is. Since opening in 2023, accolades have been showered on this exclusive raised-tent camp – as camp-like as the grand villas of Tuscany are farmhouse-ish – lauded for its traditional-chic style and appropriately modern touches. Days are as full and wildlife-rich as desired, or – by the pool, over a long languid lunch, with a book in the open-air library – as dringley-doodle as you please. Come evening, pretty lanterns illuminate wooden walkways and the land, water, and air of Africa come alive, just as they did for Ernest Hemingway in The Green Hills of Africa: “I felt the life of the country come up and fill me, as you fill a cup up with wine.”

Accommodations at North Island Okavango

Earthy textures and a contemporary African-inspired aesthetic warm each of the seven tented suites. Perched on raised wooden decks beneath the shade of mature ebony trees, all the pleasures and conveniences await. The ensuite bathroom with both indoor and outdoor showers, a deep oval bathtub, and a private sunken lagoon-facing sundeck for proper R&R between adventures. Here, from the cool of your private plunge pool, wildlife performances take centre stage, and bird-watching possibilities promise some 350 species of all shades and shapes. At the heart of the camp: a comfy lounge, a dining area for candlelit dinners, a library for quiet reflection (or maybe to find out more about the secretive serval our wily Micato Safari Director sited that morning), and an outdoor gym at the ready for workouts amidst the wild. Finally, a stargazing deck beneath the Southern Hemisphere’s sparkling canopy of constellations begs for a nightcap, near-perfect-as-perfect-can-be.

Activities at North Island Okavango

Our game drives pay court to the rightly legendary wildlife of the Okavango floodplains, savannahs, and woodlands—from the hungry hippos and crocs who inhabit the ever-shifting water channels, to one of the largest lion populations in the Delta, and the more than 40,000 elephants who migrate through the region every year. Between these early morning and late afternoon creature-charmed crusades, we find ample time for guided bush walks, water-wending mokoro canoeing, or perhaps a more thrusting motorboat excursion. Optional helicopter flights elevate one’s perspective, as does the guaranteed frisson of a sleepout beneath the African night sky. For moments of indulgent repose, a relaxing spa treatment is well-complemented with a cooling dip in the camp’s serene swimming pool.
