Insider’s Review of Matetsi Lodge

Just upstream from Victoria Falls, one of the very greatest of the world’s great wonders, Matetsi Lodge inhabits nine pristine, meandering miles of Zambezi River frontage. Not only is it this princely Victoria Falls position which makes Matetsi one of those exceedingly magical spots, but the sheer luxe-ness of its accommodations transform “life on the river” to an elevated state of being. The lovely folks at Matetsi have put heart and soul into the beautifully polished earth finishes, lustrous hand-beaten copper detailing, and custom works by local artisans to ensure the seamless flow between interior and exterior living. In keeping with its spectacular natural surrounds, stays here offer full access to both the mighty Zambezi and the 136,000-acre wilderness that is Matetsi Private Game Reserve – a back garden of wonders whose crowning jewel is The Smoke that Thunders, aka Vic Falls. It’s a near-on perfect combination of safari, river, relaxation and falls – those falls – in one magnificent spot.

Accommodations at Matetsi Lodge

What better base for fine enriching African excursions – safari, river, relaxation – than this intimate water’s edge retreat? With 16 roomy luxury suites, two family suites and a rather extravagant private villa, Matetsi presents an exclusive location from which to explore this most remarkable region. Each villa is designed to capitalize on remarkable views over the bird- and water-rich Zambezi – a song-filled world of hippos, kingfishers and osprey that invites closer exploration by riverboat, as well as keen observation from the soothing perch of a poolside deck chair. To this end, there’s a dedicated team at the ready, including your private butler, poised to anticipate all needs and desires. For families or friends travelling together, there’s an exclusive-use four-bedroomed private villa or the River Lodge Family Suites, with handy connecting rooms. Each Matetsi suite is air-conditioned and fitted with a sumptuous king-size bed, circular bathtub, indoor and outdoor rain showers, a private plunge pool and decks that flank inspiring views of the Zambezi. Warm Caprivi Strip evenings lend themselves particularly well to gathering around a romantic boma fire, surrounded by blazing fire bowls, glowing lanterns and the countless stars that inhabit the dark African night sky.

A note for families & children

The River Lodge Family Suites are thoughtfully fitted with a spacious master suite and children’s room connected via enclosed passageway, offering convenient and secure arrangements for some of the most welcome, and most lucky, families we know.

Activities at Matetsi Lodge

A visit to Mosi-oa-Tunya, “The Smoke that Thunders,” is one of the most wondrous days we could imagine. Vic Falls, 24 hours a day, every day, is totally in charge of flinging itself 360 feet straight down – and it does a bang-up job of it. Justifiably one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, a guided Falls walking tour provides an exceptional excursion amongst surrounding rainforest, fascinating history, and crazy geological occurrence. Oh, and the spray… did we mention the glorious, shimmering, unrelenting spray? Further upriver, a relaxing sunset boat cruise on the Zambezi is a must, perhaps with a twilight aperitif on its banks. Travelling by more traditional canoe is also on offer and so too, of course, a safari drive within Matetsi Private Game Reserve, known for its breeding herds of elephant and buffalo, prides of lion, and the more elusive leopard and wild dog. Most everywhere, are splendid giraffes to be admired doing their nibbling thing in thick groves of albida trees. For a further infusion of excitement, you may care to zoom above the Falls by helicopter, bungee off its bridge, or even zipline across the Batoka Gorge.
