Tswalu Game Reserve, South Africa

Tswalu Motse

Insider’s Review of Tswalu Motse

One of our most magical homes-from-home perches just where the hauntingly arid South African savannah and the seductive Kalahari converge. Surrounded by undulating grassy dunes, Tswalu is punctuated by the beautiful Korannaberg hills, making fruitful room for a greater habitat diversity than anywhere else in the region. To our very great benefit, some 240 bird and 80 mammal species live here – including the splendid Hartmann’s mountain zebra and the mesmerising wild dog – a magnificent moving tableau visible from dawn to dusk and back again. The lands of Tswalu are totally private, not to be shared with guests from other concessions or lodges, a privilege that brings with it no off-limits, no time-limits, no limits at all. Immerse yourself in iconic Kalahari sites including perfectly poised cheetah, dainty springbok and flowing, rolling, stunning sandscapes. Tswalu’s two exclusive camps, Motse and Tarkuni, are seriously luxurious launchpads for these unforgettable safari moments.

Accommodations at Tswalu Motse

Artfully designed from organic materials and outfitted to the highest standard, Motse was completely reimagined in 2019. One of only two camps on the wholly private concession Tswalu Motse is a secluded village of luxury legae (the local term for dwelling) including three expansive family villas. Each villa is fitted with two luxurious bedrooms, spacious viewing deck and open fireplace, private garden with outdoor shower and, for basking beneath the endless Kalahari skies, a sun-and-star bed. Elegant simplicity meets sublime comfort: hanging your wide-brimmed hat here ensures deeply cossetting and unfettered access to one of southern Africa’s true wildernesses.

A note for families & children

Tswalu’s Junior Ranger programme includes archery, spoor identification and casting as well as tracking on foot. Fun-filled children’s bush walks are also educational and often end with a fantastic picnic – parents like to get in on this part, too. Younger children are welcome on private game drives and three suites are specially designed for families. Complimentary child-minding services are available at any time

Activities at Tswalu

Return from the day’s spirit-lifting game drives for a cooling dip in the dappled waters of the outdoor swimming pool, a workout in the gym, or a pampering hour or two in the spa. Work on the day’s spectacular wildlife and landscape images in the in-house photographic studio, have a nose round the National Geographic library, select a vintage or two from the walk-in cellar stocked with superb South African wines. Among our favourite make-a-friend experiences: a guided walk with Tswalu’s habituated meerkat tribe – a merry band as gregarious and amusing as you’d hope to find anywhere.
