Taj Lake Palace embodies the romance of India’s royal age. Opened in 1746 by Maharana Jagat Singh II as stately summer home for the Mewar Royal family, this ethereal retreat has long played host to generations of maharajahs and maharanas. We arrive by boat to a cascade of rose petals – just as did earlier princes and princesses – with the silvery Lake Pichola, the rolling Aravalli hills of Rajasthan, and burnished splendour of Udaipur as backdrop. Now stewarded by Taj (one of the world’s and indeed our own luxe-leading favourites), the meticulously restored palace is a miracle of marble, intricate inlay, silks, and antique treasures, a world of enduring majesty truly fit for royalty.
The palace offers 65 lavish rooms and 18 opulent suites, each awash in Mughal-inspired elegance. Lovingly restored and (it almost goes without saying but we’ll drop it in nonetheless) with all the mod-cons a modern royal would expect, we slip easily into its embarrassment of rich velvets, handwoven silks, priceless carpets, carved arches, and objets d’art. Dining here is reserved exclusively for resident guests, with the privilege of choosing from refined Rajasthani cuisine at Neel Kamal, European classics at Bhairo, or globally inspired fare at Jharokha, framed by flickering candlelight and dreamily quixotic Rajasthani views. From a dip in the outdoor pool to graceful evening cocktails on the rooftop terrace – we may remember the very same patio as iconic floating home of Octopussy in the eponymous 1983 James Bond film – this place puts the panache in palace
Tour the hotel with an in-palace historian to better understand its princely past. Among many special moments: candlelit dinner aboard the Gangaur, a 150-year-old hand-oared royal barge (also a cameo in that classic Bond film). Equally transportive is the floating spa, inspired by royal pleasure barges and complete with double treatment suites, steam room, soaking pool, lounge, and private dining space suspended above the lake’s glassy waters. Beyond the palace walls, explore Udaipur’s storybook scenes of hidden courtyards, artisanal shops, and resplendent Mughal gardens in a vintage car. Always appealing is a cooling retreat to the outdoor swimming pool, perhaps something more energetic in the state-of-the-art fitness centre, or the rare opportunity to practise yoga in its spiritual home — an altogether fitting pursuit in one of India’s most enchanting settings.
