In the heart of the wild Namib Desert, where the sands shift in hues of ochre, sienna, orange, and gold, &Beyond Sossusvlei Desert Lodge welcomes guests in bold avant-garde style. Located in a 31,420-acre private reserve, this retreat is a place where the sunrise glows neon, and the nighttime constellations dazzle us with their brilliance. And the wild game! Elegant oryx and elusive rosetted leopards, mountain zebras and flamboyant ostrich: all have a part to play here amongst the dunes. These natural wonders provide a stunning backdrop to the sophisticated comfort of &Beyond Sossusvlei Desert Lodge. From each suite’s private plunge pool and skylight, to the walk-in wine cellar and an observatory helmed by a resident astronomer, at this desert oasis, hospitality and adventure go hand in hand.
&Beyond Sossusvlei Desert Lodge consists of 10 Suites and one Star Dune Suite, lined along an escarpment to ensure far-ranging views and, at the same time, an unshakeable sense of peaceful solitude. Bearing rounded walls and natural-hued furnishings, each suite’s minimal yet ergonomic layout feels reminiscent of the landscapes beyond. Inside, our glass-fronted bedroom awaits with a king-size bed under a retractable skylight, in addition to a fireplace for chilly evenings and an en-suite bathroom with a double vanity and glass-encased rain shower, which proffers 180º views of the desert. Outside, we’ll find a private veranda dining area, a plunge pool, and an outdoor shower. The Star Dune Suite is much the same, with two bedrooms linked by a covered walkway in addition to a private lounge and dining room.
The lodge’s shared lounge and dining area are built around a central bar, where delightfully deep couches look out onto a watering hole through floor-to-ceiling glass windows. Upstairs, wellness facilities are available for massages and hydrating shea butter treatments, and there’s a gym also. Take dinner in the outdoor boma, watching the campfire flickering in the night, or head to the observatory, where a resident astronomer will guide us through Namibia’s most storied constellations.
In search of rich game-viewing we’ll set off each day on game drives with our Micato Safari Director, perhaps turning a bend, arriving to a surprise sundowner in a hidden locale. In our search for flighty springboks and stately oryx we can also take to the sky, welcoming dawn from the height of a hot-air balloon that drifts quietly over the arid terrain. Fast pursuits are welcomed, such as quad-biking and e-bikes, and so too are slower adventures: spending a morning in Sossusvlei National Park, for instance, hiking up the majestic ‘Big Daddy’ sand dune. As daylight wanes, arrive back at the lodge for a flight of wine tasting, a blissful massage, or an evening awash in the hues of sunset as we wait for the stars to make their glorious debut.
