Insider’s Take on Cottar’s 1920s Safari Camp

Situated in a 6,000-acre private conservancy, less than a mile from the Maasai Mara Game Reserve in Kenya, famed Cottar’s 1920s Safari Camp was established by Calvin and Louise Cottar, whose family has been in the safari business for more than 100 years. Their love for Africa is reflected in the camp’s thoughtful evocation of safari’s luxurious golden age, and in what the Wall Street Journal Magazine calls their “innovative approach to protecting the area’s natural biodiversity.”

Accommodations at Cottar’s 1920s Safari Camp

The camp accommodates up to 28 guests in authentic white canvas luxury tents. The camp spreads to just over a half-mile and has two mess tents, so guests are assured a spacious yet intimate environment. The tents include private en suite dressing rooms and bathrooms, main bedrooms and verandas, with family tents also having a living room with a fireplace.

For those who want absolute and luxurious privacy, an abundance of wildlife (and a private staff of eight), Cottar’s Bush Villa offers the only private luxury home in the Mara. The contemporary African-style house can be rented on an exclusive basis, and has a large living room, a dining room, a magnificent viewing deck, and five en suite bedrooms, all with stunning views. A large swimming pool sits in the grounds of the Bush Villa for the exclusive use of its fortunate guests.

Activities Available at Cottar’s 1920s Safari Camp

Cottar’s is a camp dedicated to offering the full safari experience, traditional and modern. On the traditional side: day and night game drives and guided bush walks—in the company, of course, of our always-on-the-lookout Micato Safari Director— where we encounter the Maasai Mara’s spectacular cast of African creatures; old-fashioned and elegantly sumptuous bush meals and sundowners; and a chance to do some river swimming and fishing.

And, in addition to Cottar’s full range of modern amenities, we make cultural visits to Maasai villages, bask in the camp’s large pool, enjoy special bush showers and baths (a lovely experience; bathing under the infinite African sky), and one of welcomest of modern innovations: a spa and massage service where we can delve even deeper into the serenity that is one of safari’s sometimes surprising joys.
