Insider’s Review of Babylonstoren

Welcome to Africa as you’ve never seen it before: the gently rolling, purple and green landscape of the Cape Winelands. Some of the best wine in the world comes from this region—not to mention the fresh farm-to-table food. Your home here is Babylonstoren, sitting on acres of lush farmland and vineyards. Right down the road is one of the most charming villages in the Winelands, Stellenbosch, with its Cape Dutch, Georgian, and Victorian architecture and winding cobblestone streets.

Be a farmer, be a chef, be a vintner…and enjoy all the mouth-watering and nourishing benefits. They take eating seriously at Babylonstoren, and we are the happy beneficiaries. Help with a harvest or grape-crushing, or simply stroll and have your pick from an abundance of vegetables, fruits and herbs, which the chef will turn into mouth-watering dishes for you, using local meats, cheeses and seafood and serving it all with warm, home-baked farm bread. If you’d like a cooking lesson, the kitchen staff at the lodge restaurant, Babel, are happy to oblige.

Accommodations at Babylonstoren

Babylonstoren is a perfectly preserved Cape Dutch farm—some of the farm buildings even date back to the 17th century. Your garden-side private luxury villa only adds to the charm of this place, even though it is new and quite modern. This idyllic pre or post safari hideaway has been designed to reflect the crisp simplicity of the old architecture: thatched roofs, whitewashed walls, and ornate gables complement the modern wood furniture and white fabrics. Well-stocked bookshelves, extravagantly soft bedding, and an open hearth round out the cozy serenity of each villa… it truly feels like home.

A note for families & children

Children are most welcome at Babylonstoren—indeed, children under two stay free.

Activities at Babylonstoren

Spend each day at your leisure, going at your own pace as you explore the surrounding countryside by horse, bike, car or motor-trike. Stop for a wine tasting at a renowned vineyard, a farm-to-table meal at a hidden restaurant, a chance to shop for antiques on the cobbled streets of a Cape Dutch village, or an opportunity to tour a grand manor house, a la Jane Austen.

Or you’d rather explore the great outdoors? Venture out on a bird-watching expedition in the hills or a whale-watching jaunt on the waves. Canoe the rivers that wend their way through the mountains, or hike the mountains themselves, looking out from key vantage points at the vast expanse of valley floor below.

Perhaps staying at home is more your speed. There is much to do here as well, from curling up with a book and a mug of cocoa in the library to exploring the vast farmland, perhaps even helping with the harvest—the chefs in the kitchen are happy to cook whatever you pick. To work up an appetite, take a jog up the Babylonstoren kopje—the view of the Winelands from the top is worth the effort. Swimming in the salt-water pool or spending the afternoon at the spa are other worthy options.
