Next, delightful city sightseeing, including a visit to the captivating National Museum, the former home of Karen Blixen who penned Out of Africa, and a stop at Giraffe Centre, an elevated treetop aerie where we hand-feed Rothschild giraffes. We'll also enjoy the delightful hospitality of Felix and Jane Pinto at their home for lunch or dinner. Fine food, good conversation and warm camaraderie are sure to be the highlight of the day. Upon returning to our hotel, we already feel like old African hands. Day 4 - Day 5 AmboseliIn the morning we board our flight to the bush country of Amboseli National Park, where Mount Kilimanjaro dominates every vista. Amboseli is famous for its tranquil beauty and approachable wildlife Early morning and late afternoon game drives happen daily. We'll overnight at either Amboseli Serena Lodge or Ol Tukai Lodge. Day 6 Lake Manyara
Today we drive to Arusha, Tanzania for lunch before winging to the ancient lake of Manyara, where game is plentiful and the birdwatching magnificent. It is also one of the few places in Africa to see tree-climbing lions. Our deluxe accommodations at Lake Manyara Serena Lodge overlook gleaming water, where we may spy the area's pink flamingoes, a frantic counterpoint to the hippos lounging in the lake. Day 7 - Day 8 Ngorongoro CraterAfter a morning game drive and breakfast we bid farewell to Lake Manyara, and are rewarded by a lovely drive to Ngorongoro Crater. Our lodge sits dramatically on the rim, revealing a panorama of the world's largest, unflooded and unbroken caldera. On our second day, we descend into the crater and spend the morning tracking animals. This natural amphitheatre is said to have the largest concentration of animals in all of Africa, including a high density of lions and thousands of flamingos. The ever-changing mood of this great amphitheatre will hold our attention every second. Our accommodations are at Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge. Day 9 - Day 10 Serengeti National ParkA visit is made to renowned Olduvai Gorge where the Leakey family uncovered the fossil Homo habilis (the handy man), the first tool user, who lived over 1.75 million years ago. Then we reach the Serengeti, deep in the heart of the largest and most diverse migration corridor in the world. Wild beasts, creatures of every size and description, flood the savannah in droves...herds of mammoth elephant, the stately giraffe and the lumbering rhino all mix together alongside the more diminutive inhabitants...the delicate antelope, bulky wildebeest and the comical warthog. And we hope to see it all! Serengeti Sopa Lodge is our lodge of choice here. Day 11 - Day 12 Maasai MaraWe fly to the Mara via Arusha and Nairobi, and here we find the Old Africa of our imaginations, with rolling grasslands dotted by acacia trees and sweeping plains teeming with wildlife. Hundreds of thousands of animals walk this ancient migratory route. No matter how much you have dreamed about Africa, this is more than you expected- and the ideal backdrop for a hot air balloon expedition. If we haven't visited a Maasai village yet, we will do so here: it's a poignant look into another world. Another great highlight will be stunning bush sundowners-a glorious al fresco cocktail party overlooking the savannah at sunset. Our tented camp in the Mara is either Mara Safari Club or Kichwa Tembo. Day 13 - Day 14 Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari ClubToday we fly to Nairobi and continue by air across Kenya's fertile Central Highlands- reminiscent of the English countryside-to the Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club. Our upgraded accommodations are in the superb Club Level of deluxe rooms.
