12 Days Departs Thursday, Returns Monday
Day 1 Depart Home
The adventure begins as we board our international flight.
Day 2 Arrive Cape Town
Cape Town is one of the world’s great travel treasures. Your Micato Tour Leader whisks you to the city’s most exciting hotel: the sensational urban-chic One&Only Resort on the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. With Micato’s compliments, you are invited to enjoy a treatment in the world-class spa—if not today, then tomorrow—emerging renewed for delightful explorations around town.
Day 3 Cape Town
We discover the colourful threads that make up Cape Town’s rich cultural tapestry, first at Khayelitsha Township, to witness 21st century township life at the remarkable Rosie’s Kitchen. For the last two decades, Rosie has fed the town’s destitute children and elderly, and she warmly invites us to visit and lend her a hand, too. We’ll meet Golden, a beloved artisan who pays local children to help him collect discarded tin cans, from which he creates stunning “flowers” that make for precious keepsakes. A cable car ride to Table Mountain today or tomorrow further buoys our day, which ends with dinner at the home of Micato friends and hosts, a delightful Capetonian couple, brimming with insider lore and boundless hospitality.
Day 4 Cape Town – Cape Peninsula
Cape Town’s delights include a full day of touring the spectacular Cape Peninsula, including a trip on the Cape Point funicular for the famous view of the union of two oceans. We’ll experience historic Simon’s Town with its charming Victorian architecture, the penguin colony at Boulders Beach, picturesque Chapman’s Peak, and Kalk Bay, where traditions run deep and the characters are as colourful as their bright-toned fishing boats. Dinner this evening features marvelous interactive drumming, which is difficult to describe but more magnificent and thrilling than you could ever imagine—it will be a highlight!
Day 5 - Day 7 Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve
This morning we fly to Sabi Sabi for a remarkable three-night stay in one of South Africa’s most fruitful wildlife plains. The lavish surroundings here, in concert with the open veld, create an experience quite literally fit for royalty! Their Royal Majesties King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain, King Harald and Queen Sonya of Norway as well as a host of celebrities have experienced the golden joys of Sabi Sabi.
Sabi Sabi epitomizes Africa’s magic. With no fences between our Sabi Sands Reserve and adjacent Kruger into the bushveld by open-top vehicle or on foot. Middays are spent in quiet pursuits, reading poolside, visiting a village, or simply enjoying the exquisite tranquility. Early evenings bring another foray into the bush, a sumptuous dinner, a glimpse of the Southern Cross, and perhaps a fine brandy.
Day 8 - Day 10 Shambala Private Game Reserve
A last morning game drive at Sabi Sabi and we wing our way to Johannesburg and continue to the spectacular Waterberg, an exceptional UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, where we’ll be enveloped in the divinely quiet embrace of Zulu Camp in Shambala Private Game Reserve.
On the first of three perfect nights in our private chalets, we’ll likely be lulled to sleep by the quiet rush of the river running through camp, awakening perhaps to the cry of fish eagles scouring the river for breakfast. Our versatile chefs have at their fingertips the finest local bounty as well as vintages from internationally-renowned South African wine estates, aching to be poured when we’re not otherwise engaged in this luscious natural wilderness.
The ways to be engaged are simply sensational, with bush drives yielding a lexicon of antelope from doe-eyed steenbok and spunky eland to nimble impala and stern wildebeest. The mountains and reserve also give way to our friends the Big Five, giraffes and cape mountain zebras, and seldom-seen cats like the bat-eared caracal and large-spotted genet. We’ll encounter many of these creatures from the backs of Shambala’s magnificent elephants, who we’ll have more than one opportunity to meet and fall in love with during our stay.
Dreamy evenings bring a pastime quite unique to this place, sundowner cruises along the reserve’s private dam. While we sip classic South African vintages we’ll make easy work of spying wondrous-looking fish as well as hippos and Nile crocodiles nonchalantly pausing for a drink. As we sail through the sunset, the bushveld will give way to a dusk thick with the now-familiar echoing calls of birds as a backdrop to the convivial conversation with our guides and hosts at this private mountain hideaway.
Day 11 Depart Shambala Private Game Reserve
Awestruck by the diverse grandeur of South Africa, we admire its wilds one last time as we make our way back to Johannesburg for international flights this evening.
Day 12 Arrive Home
Our sweeping sojourn draws to a reluctant close.
