Okavango Delta, Botswana

Abu Camp

Insider’s Review of Abu Camp

Unspoiled and untamed, Botswana’s Okavango Delta is one of the world’s largest inland river systems. Tranquil lagoons and waterways wending through immense floodplains contrast with the adjacent parched desert landscapes. Over 1,100 species call this land their home, and both predator and prey abound — this is ideal game-viewing country.

Abu Camp is a wonderful basecamp for a luxury safari for so many reasons, but the Camp’s resident elephant herd has truly charmed us. Distinct from other regions, Botswana’s elephant numbers are on the rise and appreciation of these gentle giants is top of the agenda at Abu Camp.

Accommodations at Abu Camp

In the heart of the Okavango Delta sits Abu Camp’s six luxurious tents on a 400,000-acre private reserve. The tents have a distinctive elegance and surprising opulence in the midst of this ancient riverine forest. Stylish furnishings grace the spacious lounge-ready tents, and light fills the space from your private viewing deck over the lagoon, indulgently equipped with secluded outdoor copper bathtub and private plunge pool. A choice of dining styles is available to suit the mood: from wine-paired feasts in the romantic library to casual meals on the deck overlooking the cool waters of the swimming pool and beyond.

Activities at Abu Camp

Safari through the water-rich Delta in a vehicle, on foot, or even gliding through the maze of reed-laden channels in a mokoro —a charmingly rustic, quintessentially African version of the gondola. You can even fish on the river from your mokoro, bringing home tigerfish or tilapia for the chef to cook. Explore the camp’s library uniquely rich in elephant behaviour and conservation or lounge in the panoramic swimming pool. There’s a gym and, for both reward and relaxation, a spa treatment in your private tent is a fine way to celebrate. At days’ end, Abu tradition includes the most fabulous sundowners on a motorboat. A breeze whispers through the air, cool and soothing, as you cruise through the wilds and sip a refreshing cocktail. A pride of lions gathers in the golden evening light, preparing for the hunt. Crocodiles lounge in the river and hippos burble below. Birds swoop low over the water. Another perfect evening is yours on safari.
