Insider’s Review of Lewa Safari Camp

Winner of a passel of well-deserved awards, Lewa Safari Camp is the inspired result of the pioneering Craig family’s multi-generational experience in one of Africa’s most beautiful locales, the vast Laikipia Plateau. Game viewing in the Lewa Conservancy is outstanding, views of the rolling savannahs and riverine forests of the Plateau and of lordly Mount Kenya are grand and ever-changing, and the camp’s service is at Africa’s toppest and cheeriest notch. There is much to luxuriate in at Lewa Safari Camp, including the knowledge that all the camp’s profits and conservancy fees are reinvested directly into the Lewa Conservancy’s groundbreaking community and conservation programmes.

Accommodations at Lewa Safari Camp

The camp’s 12 ensuite, state-of-the-art luxury tents are airy and commodious (as we often point out, calling these beautifully furnished, and modernly equipped tents is like calling a Maserati Quattroporte a pleasant way to get from Point A to Point B). Each tent has a wooden-decked veranda from which to greet the birdsong African morning, enjoy afternoon snacks, and relax at all hours of the day and night, entranced by what the great Peter Beard called the African “paradise caressed by light and air in the most special forms.”

Activities at Lewa Safari Camp

Game drives in Lewa are simply and unforgettably spectacular. The Big Five—lion, leopard, rhino, Cape Buffalo, and elephant—are all numerous in the Conservancy. (Speaking of the monarch of beasts, we’re always reminded of how pleasantly shocking it is to see lions in their homeland. “In their build, carriage, and movements,” Isak Dinesen wrote, “lions possess a greatness, a majesty which makes one feel later that everything else is so trivial—thousand of generations of unrestricted supreme authority and one suddenly comes to feel the mighty power of nature, when one looks at it right the eyes.”)

A substantial portion of Africa’s handsome Grevy’s zebras reside here, along with a healthy number of endangered rhinos (Lewa first found fame for its heroic rhino conservation), along with scores of not-really lesser beasts who we are ever pleased to see going about their work and play in this paradise of light and air and timeless freedom.
