Rich in history and culture, Johannesburg is South Africa's largest city. Always a bustling and vibrant place—not to mention an important hub for titans of industry and business—Johannesburg gained global prominence when it was selected to host the 2010 World Cup. The marvelous modern architecture, fabulous hotels, five-star cuisine, delightful shopping and (of course) excellent soccer fields won over the selection committee, and Jo'Burg has only been growing in popularity ever since!
Modelled after a Mediterranean village, the Westcliffe is perched on the side of mountain, overlooking the city and the zoological gardens, so you feel simultaneously a world away and part of it all—indeed, you may even hear a lion roar in the zoo after nightfall. Surrounded by carefully curated gardens and limpid blue pools, The Westcliff's lounge is utterly luxurious and its spacious bedrooms are all unique—differing in shape, layout and décor, but sharing a light, airy charm and luscious views.
Johannesburg is a thrilling metropolis, and we can enjoy all it has to offer, from cafes and markets to museums and shows to fabulous adventurous in the surrounding environs.
For history buffs, a tour of Constitution Hill and a visit to the apartheid museum are the perfect ways to spend the day—or go back even farther: a visit to the Cradle of Humankind, a fascinating UNESCO World Heritage fossil site where the first adult Australopithecus africanus was discovered. We can chat with the archeologists, and maybe do a bit of fossil-hunting ourselves.
Culture aficionados will love perusing the city’s art galleries and catching a show at Market Theatre—a centre for modern South African playwriting. Or perhaps venture to one of the many outdoor markets to find one-of-a-kind pieces of South African art. We may also visit the intriguing Mai Mai Market, which is dedicated to traditional herbs and tribal healers.
Another fascinating adventure is a trip to Soweto—a former township from the times of Apartheid—where we’ll visit the Regina Mundi Church, the former homes of Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Tutu, the and Hector Pieterson memorial. End this visit on a heartwarming note with a visit to a local school.
The Westcliff is a true urban escape: in its cliff-side location— with tranquil pools and sculpted gardens—you feel nearly rural, until you are reminded by the sweeping views below that you’re in South Africa’s largest city. Relax and revive here, enjoying an exquisite blend of cosmopolitan and rural pleasure, before out into the wilderness of the African bush.
A note for families & children:
The Westcliff Hotel is happy to host children of all ages. Baby-sitting services are also available, and rooms and suites have ample room for a cot or an extra bed. There are even special children's menus and movies on hand!
