Botswana is a land of astonishing contrasts. The Okavango Delta is a fertile oasis in this mostly dry country. A striking combination of woodlands and wetlands, this region supports a unique and fascinating ecosystem. The Vumbura Reserve covers an area of close to 130,000 acres, and offers both land and water activities amidst a wonderful variety of habitats and a great diversity of wildlife.
Built under a canopy of cool and shady trees, Vumbura Plains Camp is the pinnacle of elegance, surprisingly set amidst the pristine Okavango wilderness. Your gloriously spacious suite provides a plunge pool for keeping cool between game drives, a unique indoor/outdoor lounge perfect for gazing at the swaying grasses below or the stars above, and en-suite bathroom with an indoor and an outdoor shower. Billowing curtains enhance the airy atmosphere of your room, able to open on three sides. The lounge, dining area and pub are also raised off the ground on decks, providing delightful views from beneath the gentle shade of jackalberry and African mangosteen trees.
We explore by foot, African dug-out canoe (mokoro), motorboat or 4x4. Breathtaking moments are plentiful here in one of Botswana’s most treasured areas: watching crocodiles sunning themselves by the water or a pride of lions lounging in the shade of a baobab. The Okavango Delta—waterways and deltas, savannahs and forests—and is teeming with over 1,100 species including giraffes, leopard, hippos—elephants and lion, cheetah and wild dog are often seen in this area as well.
Or perhaps take a day to fish in the wonderful waterways. Catch tigerfish, tilapia, catfish and more, then bring it back to camp to be cooked by the camp chef for dinner. But before dinner, we’ll indulge in sundowners, watching the breeze turn the grasses into a waving sea as the sun sets in fiery gold and pink and the first stars in the Southern Cross twinkle in the sky.
Privacy. A much-valued, and very rare, commodity in the world today, and the greatest luxury at Vumbura Plains—more coveted even than the sumptuous furniture, exquisite food, and unparalleled views from every vista. The elevated tents have ample space between them, and each has their own large lounges, from which you can see animals, birds, waving grasses, flowing water…but never other people. If you’re looking for romance, meditation, or uninterrupted time with your family, then Vumbura Plains is certainly the place.
A note for families & children:
Vumbura Plains Camp is happy to host children six years old and older-indeed, 5-12 year-old children stay for a reduced rate.
