THE (NEW) HEART OF DARKNESS: MICATO SAFARIS HONORS EARTH HOUR

˜ Safari-Goers will Enjoy Candle-Lit Bush Dinners; Swahili Sing-Alongs ˜

NEW YORK, NY – March 19, 2009 – When the clock strikes 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 28, 2009, luxury safari outfitter Micato Safaris (www.micato.com) will join millions of businesses, communities, and individuals around the globe to celebrate Earth Hour, an international initiative to raise awareness about global climate issues. During the World Wildlife Fund’s Earth Hour, lights around the world -- from the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco to Rome’s Colosseum -- will be turned off. So, too, will the lights at many safari camps, hotels and lodges throughout Africa – from Cape Town to the Chyulu Hills of Kenya— but Micato Safaris’ travellers need not fear the dark. They will be treated to special Earth Hour activities, such as bonfires on the savannah, candle-lit bush dinners, and Swahili-sing-alongs, led by Maasai elders.

Activities include a special candle-lit barbeque dinner at Nairobi’s venerable Norfolk Hotel – recycled brown bags and lit candles will be the principal lighting throughout the entire hotel. At the historic Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club, Micato travellers will enjoy a menu featuring freshly grown organic vegetables from the Mount Kenya region – served around the pool which will be illuminated with more than 100 floating candles.

“Responsible travel has many dimensions and can be manifested in many ways, but it begins with the conviction that each of us can make a positive impact in the fight against climate change. So it is only natural that we would join the World Wildlife Fund in seeking to find solutions to the escalating climate crisis,” states Dennis Pinto, Managing Director, Micato Safaris.

In South Africa, Nobel Peace Prize recipient Archbishop Desmond Tutu called for action on climate change, “Earth Hour is an opportunity for every man, woman and child from all corners of the globe to come together with a united voice and make a loud powerful statement on the issue of climate change,” he said.*

Earth Hour began in Sydney, Australia, in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008, that number grew to 50 million, and the goal for 2009 is 1 billion. The results of Earth Hour will be presented to world leaders at the 2009 Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen.**
