NEW YORK, NY (July 29, 2009) - W.C. Fields once said, "Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water!" Fortunately, a new wave of gourmands have hit the shores -- and safari camps -- of Kenya these days, introducing fresh, sustainably-raised produce and meats, elegant food preparation, and new menus that incorporate locally-sourced ingredients and exciting flavor combinations. Micato Safaris' East Africa Epicurean Safari introduces visitors to the many delights of the Kenyan table... from the sophisticated international restaurants of Nairobi to a traditional five-course bush dinner served under the African moon - a wealth of options that would even satisfy Mr. Fields!!
The 9-day journey includes:
Day 1 Accommodations at Fairmont The Norfolk Hotel, Nairobi. Enjoy a welcome dinner at the Chef's Table at Tatu, Fairmont The Norfolk's new steakhouse. An array of delectable, locally-sourced products grace the menu, including Iced Mombasa King Prawn with tomato horseradish and lemon-herb mayonnaise and Malindi Oysters shipped daily from the Kenyan Coast, plus Naivasha Crawfish Bisque, a variety of grilled steaks raised by specially-selected Kenyan ranchers and grilled "Nyama Choma"-style, Mombassa Lobster Tail, and Nile Perch flown in from Lake Victoria.
Day 2 Nairobi. This morning, explore the local city market with Fairmont East Africa's Executive Group Chef, Hubert Des Marais. Chef Des Marais is a fascinating guide, and guests will learn about the steps he is taking to serve guests a 100-percent locally-sourced menu at Fairmont East Africa's three Kenyan properties. Next, no trip to Nairobi would be complete without lunch at the world-famous Carnivore restaurant, where guests dine on an endless supply of meat- beef, pork, chicken, lamb, goat, and even ostrich and crocodile!
After spending an afternoon touring the former home of "Out of Africa" author Karen Von Blixen, and the site of her ill-fated coffee plantation and a visit to Kiambethu Farm, a lush and lovely tea estate in the Limuru Highlands, this evening you will visit Felix and Jane Pinto, founders of Micato Kenya, at their gracious home high atop Lavington Hill for cocktails and dinner. Their chef, with over twenty-five years in service with the family, is well known for his expertise in Continental, Indian and Kenyan cuisine.
Days 3-4 Travel by plane to Lewa Downs Wilderness Trails. One of Kenya's early cattle ranches, Lewa Downs has been in the Craig family since 1924. Lewa Downs is one of the very few private ranches in the world where one can see a remarkable variety of wildlife interact with each other, including elephant, rhino, dik dik, reticulated giraffe, eland, hartebeest, Cape buffalo, zebra, lions, leopard and cheetah.
At dinner, guests share meals around a long banquet table in the open-air dining room. Home-raised livestock and a five-acre organic garden are transformed by skilled chefs into healthy and delicious meals.
Explore Lewa Downs with morning and afternoon game drives (followed by sundowner cocktails, of course!), camel and horseback rides, and visits to Lewa's ancient archaeological site and the region's world-famous carpet weavers.
Days 5-6 Drive to the newly-refurbished Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club, a luxurious resort on the equator that world leaders and celebrities, from Winston Churchill to Brooke Shields, have called their home while in East Africa. Activities at Mount Kenya Safari Club include fly fishing, horseback riding, tennis, golf, and swimming. Guests may also view chimpanzees, pygmy hippos, and bongos at the William Holden Wildlife Conservancy, located on-property.
Visit Mount Kenya Safari Club's Organic Chicken Farming Community Project, a partnership with the Kanyoni Youth Development and Environmental Project Association to develop an organic chicken supply to the Club with fresh, free range eggs while providing local youth with tools for empowerment, education and employment.
In the kitchens of the Mount Kenya Safari Club, chefs will teach guests to prepare traditional Kenyan dishes, including Ugali (a simple staple made from maize and water that is eaten with meats and vegetables), Kachumbari (a side dish of onion and cabbage, tomatoes, peppers, and spices), and Mandazi (a sweet fried dough, similar to a doughnut).
For dinner, guests will be treated to a lavish bush dinner, complete with lanterns, china, silver, performances by local Chukka dancers, and fresh, locally-inspired cuisine including Braised Beef Short Ribs with Guava Pumpkin and Tomato, traditional African Corn-Crusted Tilapia with Crawfish Tails and Skumawiki, and a signature Ostrich Carpaccio served alongside shaved fennel, capers, and Grana Padano.
Days 7-8 Fly to the exotic island of Lamu, on the Kenyan coast, a centuries-old trading port. Arab traders settled in the area from the 9th century onward, and traders and explorers from Turkey, Portugal, China and the Middle East have all made their mark here, creating the enduring Swahili culture. Guests stay at Lamu House, where ancient Swahili architecture meets modern-day amenities and service.
Lamu offers a host of activities, from sunbathing along pristine beaches to deep-sea fishing. Guests will experience a sailing excursion aboard a private dhow (a traditional Swahili sail boat) and an on-deck Swahili luncheon prepared by a private chef. Swahili cuisine blends the best local ingredients into a tantalizing fusion of tastes. Abundant fresh seafood, coconut, and tropical fruit are all combined with exotic spices that have been traded along the East African coast for centuries.
Day 9 Dayroom at Fairmont The Norfolk Hotel, Nairobi. Depart for US.
